(Video, 3min43sec, 2020)
"Soul (Re)cycling with Raccoons in Human-Time" (2020) was created while in self-isolation during the pandemic. The piece was inspired from taking short nightly walks around the block and sharing moments of pause, locking eyes with numerous nocturnal scavengers in the neighborhood dumpster. The work positions a (non)human raccoon as a speculative fitness instructor and playfully remixes zoological studies with language from the tele-fitness industry, specifically that of indoor cycling classes and live stream workout products. By embodying the persona of a raccoon, speaking to and from them on “how to survive human-time,” the (non)human performance becomes a complex site for tending to an improbable future, troubling the fragility of timescales — which time are “we” ready to survive in and whose survival are “we” preparing for. In short, the project intends to explore the indeterminacy of cohabitation-in-the-making for survival: the absurd processes of anthropomorphization that helps humans reimagine kinship with nonhumans and the necessity to share resources and maintain a balanced relationship with all (non)living beings in the biosphere for coexistence.

SQUIRRELING Facial Emotion Detection is an interspecies collaboration that walks through a series of movements inspired by the behavioral and emotional responses of Fox Squirrels. In this human-adaptation of “squirreling” that has been modified for the human body, we will learn how to protect our facial expressions from being identified, universally categorized, and mapped by emotion detection algorithms and cameras, while securely signaling nuanced emotive expressions from one human to another.

Cricket World is a video that takes the form of a music video karaoke that accompanies lyrics for viewer participation. As a call for a soft revolution responding to unforeseen life experiences including both individual and collective trauma, the project intends to evoke compassion, hugging and supporting each other from near and afar. The “cricket” sings and invites you to “this cricket world,” a world with an army of dreamers in a dream, one that is no longer when it becomes a shared-living-reality. Through playful humor, such as in hopping and landing back on grass as a cricket, the video metaphorically speaks of resilience, the ability to bounce back with the help from one another.

The Hi-Feel Lo-Tech Workout (HFLTW) series introduces a series of intentional and meaningful synergistic micro-movements that assist in getting in touch with one’s own embodied emotions. This specific relaxation and recovery session has been designed for mind-body-conspicuous humans who experience increased feelosophical flows triggered by the subtle yet rapid changes from living-through-feeling in the technological environment. Together, we will focus on releasing muscle tension by means of self-myofascial release and return to a paused-state-of-condition that is mindfully present in-the-real-life-now.
A Virtual Lotioning Session is about noticing and attending to one’s own body-to-body. Through an intimate yet public presentation of applying lotion to one’s own hand(s), the video performance positions self-care as a doubling act, one that is for others as much as it is for oneself. With a humorous spin on a daily ritual that is simultaneously mundane and absurdly sensual, an emollient-for-skin morphs into oil paint and a hand transforms into a “sensorial canvas,” waiting to be touched by all felt-experiences. As noted in the video, "Time to give your hand(s) some loving that only hugs your hand and no other human's.

[Finger Flexor]: A Hi-Feel Lo-Tech Workout for the Mind-Body-Conspicuous Contemporary Human

Have you been noticing new guttural sensations but have not been able to toggle off your feels or pinpoint the cause?
[Finger Flexor] is a hi-feel lo-tech device that assists in making the mind-body-conspicuous for contemporary humans through meaningful micro-movements of the appendage muscles, joints in the palms, and ligaments and tendons in the fingers. Imagined for those who experience an increased flow of emotions triggered by the subtle yet rapid changes from “living through feeling” in the technological environment, the [Finger Flexor] promotes attention to the body bringing the self back to a physically steady-state condition that is mindfully present in-the-real-life-now. This short workout video introduces a series of intentional synergistic movements of the extremities and appendage muscles that will bring much necessary attention to the modern human body.
Feeling all the feels resonating from your body is only natural. The body’s reaction and response to any given environment is not only an ancient survival mechanism that is necessary for averting stressful situations or analyzing potentially hazardous circumstances, but also a learning mechanism for preventing the cycle of making the same mistakes twice. This streamlined and embodied process is invisible until the body starts to reroute attention back to its physical presence by using neurotransmitters and sense-based-signals to communicate Psyche Jittering Senses (PJS). Although much of PJS research is unpopular and painstakingly slow, due to the fact that the effects of it drastically vary depending on the human subject of study, researchers have been gathering evidence by monitoring individuals who daydream heavily, habitually neglect notifications, experience full force disruption of sleep, and struggle with phantom phone syndrome. The general consensus among PJS researchers is that actively performing intermittent physical exercises throughout the day with devices such as the [Finger Flexor] can help prevent PJS and allow the flow of bodily emotions to feel natural again.
Once the [Finger Flexor] workout is seamlessly and successfully integrated into your daily routine, to the level where you find yourself flexing before you are aware of it, you will feel a significant difference when you reach out and lend a hand to help another human being.
Breathe in and breathe out. Stop daydreaming about a time before emails and phones that are smarter than you, anxiously mulling over the fact that the only phone number you can recall is your own. Get your hands on the [Finger Flexor] and get in touch with your own digits. Stay mind-body-conspicuous.

Analog Sentiment are social-media-story-specific videos of movements up to 15 seconds long per clip. Often continuously streamed as 3-4 nonlinear videos, the experiments pair moving images with electronic writing or talking head exposés that remix internet vernacular and pop song lyrics. The process of making is highly intuitive and improvisational dependent on the immediacy of a running smartphone camera and limited to the duration of Instagram’s “hands free” recording mode. In other words, thoughts run wild and ideas turn into free-range imaginings.
Creating speculative narratives and scenarios through a post-humanistic, post-anthropocentric, and feminist lens, the observations have a hyperbolically inquisitive and critical undertone. From observing household objects and consumables to engaging with broader media archeological investigations on analog technological devices, the thematic attention of the series is as spontaneous and unfocused as the spontaneity involved in the active processes of sense-making. The sensitization of unknowing starts from repositioning the agency of the subject of inquiry and is achieved through wordplay and object-oriented persona-building that urges viewers to experience everyday material “objects” and “things” through alternate perspectives, opening pathways for observing how they affect us and each other. The quasi-informational and pseudoscientific interpretation of these “objects” and “things” become points of destabilization and portals for disorientation -- similar to the rabbit hole that led Alice into a Wonderland.
The “things” and “objects” in the study become feelosophical departure points for mind-bending exercises and thought experiments.

"Diary Dreams for Three" is an evocative tropical-fever induced music video artwork that explores the fragmentation of digital identities in relation to the construction of virtual worlds. The video centers around a figure that is either fabricating or being fabricated by a slowly rotating fantastical world she is situated in. Hence, her movement is nuanced and deliberate, yet confusing. The colorful audiovisual experience is driven by a poetic assemblage of digital artifacts and speculative aquatic creatures that become vehicles and invitational cues for viewers to traverse in believable, plausible, parallel, alternative multiverse blobospheric worlds fabricated through the imaginative narratives triggered by the viewer’s own personal fictions. Remixing lyrics written by popular female musicians with private diary notes contemplating my responsibility as an Asian-American woman artist who uses the body as an intentional conduit for materializing intangible thoughts and curious provocations, I hope viewers find a magical key to unlock their own special cabinet of curiosities.
Time-Piece is a looping dual-channel video work that travels through experiential and perceptual timepieces that remind us of the temporality of time in relation to natural phenomena and technological artifacts.
Marking the Big Bang as its origin, our perception of time is one that predates our existence - a concept we have constructed and normalized our behaviors to. There once was a time when mechanical computation and the measurement of time was not a technological possibility. Brewing wondrous supernatural myths about the unknown and heightening our reliance on natural phenomena such as the passing of seasons and internal-clockworking of animals, we were more observant to immediate changes unraveling before our eyes.
To grasp the ungraspable passing of time, we invented machinations and machines to work on our behalf. Thoughtfully providing ourselves with the illusion of control out of reconciliation and convenience, we saw our dependence continue to rise as we permitted our desires to supersede our needs.
As we further travel through time and approach the twenty-first century, we see advancements in transportation helping us travel across long-distances in short periods of time and developments in affordable and readily available communication devices providing us with the opportunity to quickly connect with people from around the world. With the deepening relationship with synthetic technological artifacts, our dependence on the environment and natural resources will resume and the inner workings of these forces will only shine through when we are able to carefully look beyond the systems we have presented ourselves with.

Vilém Flusser Toward a Philosophy on Post-Apparatus

In Conversation with Vilém Flusser Toward a Philosophy of Post-Apparatus
Apparatus decisions are now being made on the basis of post-apparatus decisions; apparatus decisions have degenerated into "function-al" decisions, and human intention has long-gone been evaporated. Although post-apparatus originally emerged to counterbalance the apparatus to serve human intention, that human intention had already long-gone receded before the horizon of "fourth generation" apparatus. Therefore, it is only possible to re-invent a now-old practice of freedom in the post-apparatus universe.
33 years since Vilém Flusser published “Toward a Philosophy on Photography” and the prophetic burgeoning of Net.Art and then Post-Internet Art, it is evident that the photographic apparatus that Flusser talks of is no longer tangible nor easily materialized as that of a photographic camera. Yet, his philosophical approach to photography as a departure point to configure many mode-ls for a world driven by the next generation of apparatus, where information is not only produced but is self-reflexive, is still highly relevant.
